The ABCs of Abscess
A dental abscess, or abscessed tooth, is painful and can lead to serious, life-threatening complications. If your immune system is already compromised by chronic diseases like diabetes or a heart condition, things can escalate quickly. Here are some abscess facts to know before thinking your toothache will go away on its own.
What causes dental abscess? Dental abscess is usually the result of bacterial infection. Staphylococcus is a common culprit that sends white blood cells to fight it. The inflammation from that kills nearby tissue and creates the abscess.
Symptoms of abscess include a severe, throbbing toothache; sensitivity to hot or cold foods; fever; swollen face or cheek; swollen lymph nodes under neck or jaws and sensitivity to chewing and biting.
Abscess dangers shouldn’t be ignored. Untreated abscesses can cause sepsis and other fatal complications if the infection spreads to surrounding tissue in your body.
